Daylight Canyon: My Unique Desert Modern Rustic Interior Style
My Desert Modern Rustic style is an eclectic, intentional mix of influences that draws from my own creative journey. Growing up in Southern California, I happily soaked up that iconic laid-back, desert-meets-surf-inspired, outdoor lifestyle. It shows up in the way I love to incorporate natural textures, nostalgic touches, various flora (always!), and sun-drenched colors. And my other years spent living all over the the US and abroad have given me a passionate appreciation for different cultures and design aesthetics, which I love to weave into my work.
What exactly is my take on this Desert Modern Rustic Interior Style?
A Modern Rustic spirit and aesthetic is foundational to most of my design work - be it brand design or interiors. Exactly how it sounds, it incorporates both vintage and new, and evokes a sense of warmth and familiarity blended with clean lines, and delightfully irreverent design moments too. Daylight Canyon’s Modern Rustic mood direction has a specifically Desert spin to it—that warm California sunshine filtering through a window (because tons of natural light is always key), with raw natural textures and beautiful color incorporated throughout. It’s a blend of contrasting elements, like the ruggedness of the desert meeting the sleek lines of mid-century design—creating a mood that is inviting and sophisticated, grounding and a little wild.
Looking at this simple "Daylight Canyon" mood board, you can see how this all comes together. The warm terracotta tones of the pottery and rug remind me of hot sunsets in the desert. The vibrant red sofa, a playful and bold pop of color. And the natural textures – the woven basket, the carved wooden hand chair – they bring in that earthy, grounded feel set against the colorful marbled artwork.
This is what truly excites me: creating spaces that are beautiful, cool, unique and comfortable—places that feel elevated, special, and never cookie-cutter—that allow for individuality and self-expression, and are a reflection of the unique taste and spirit that shape each of us.
